Evolving. Learning. Discovering.

Nearly three years ago I embarked on a brand new career path - a direct-to-consumer marketing role with the SCCA Proton Therapy Center. Ten months after starting, we were sent home for what we all thought would be a two-month commute break.

Little did we know we were moving headlong into a pandemic.

In 2021, the Proton Center formally merged with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and we’re now finalizing a second merger with Fred Hutch. In my time with the Center, I’ve grown professionally: I’ve defined and led comprehensive marketing strategies to achieve aggressive goals; grown my expertise in optimization of marketing mix and execution of digital and traditional marketing campaigns; overseen online marketing channels including SEM, display, and organic and paid social media; led production of highly effective and actionable marketing campaigns and their associated assets for digital media, radio, and television; created the media strategy and buying plan for the Center; built and cultivated relationships with a roster of patients and physicians to lead storytelling efforts on behalf of the Center; and utilized a wide range of  tactics including corporate communications, email, traditional and digital publications, video, website development and special events to drive engagement with potential patients, physicians, the general public and the media.

I've also established valued relationships with colleagues of all levels within the organization; cultivated and managed relationships with internal, cross-functional teams, physicians and other healthcare professionals, external partners, community organizations, and vendors.

I’ve exceeded benchmarks.

At the SCCA Proton Therapy Center I drove patient starts up by 4% during the height of COVID. During that same time, consults of direct-to-consumer leads rose 35% under my direction. In 2021, Center was up 13% to LY and 49% to budget in leads, while qualified leads rose 35% to LY and 35% to budget. I oversaw placement of earned media stories in top media outlets including King 5 News, the Seattle Times, Root Sports and KVI radio, driving more than 620,000 in potential audience from earned media alone. I researched and selected the agencies and vendors producing on behalf of the Center, served in an executive producer capacity for two videos and seven marketing campaigns including videos and social media assets.

Accolades and honors.

About me.

IMG_4566.JPG

I’m more than the sum of my parts: I’m a marketing strategist who drove patient starts by 4% during the height of COVID. During that same time consults of direct-to-consumer leads rose 35% under my direction. At SCCA Proton Therapy Center, I control a $1.46M budget that includes oversight of three agencies; ideation, creation and production of assets for television, print and digital use - delivered on time and on (or under) budget.

While these numbers are interesting, consider this: prior to joining SCCA Proton Therapy Center in May of 2019, I had little experience in this type of marketing. At the Center I have the great fortune to collaborate with numerous teams including the C Suite, doctors, intake team and patient services. Additionally, I served on the National Association of Proton Therapy Center’s educational committee, helping to create the organization’s 2021 virtual conference.

Prior to joining the Center I was an award-winning art director who wrote sharp, insightful copy, and was an adaptable content creator capable of building a website (or a print publication) from the ground up.

I remain an enthusiastic collaborator who had the great fortune of working with virtually every team at the SCCA Proton Therapy Center (and the WSDA) because of the interdepartmental nature of my work. I’m a compelling communicator who has managed a staff of 12, run a speakers’ bureau, strategized with boards of directors and designed a family of logos with an eye for brand awareness.

I give back to the community through volunteer work. I have worked with Seattle Humane helping to train and exercise dogs awaiting adoption, a role that was put on hold during the pandemic. I’m so excited to return there and work with dogs again - it’s a passion of mine. Before that I was a kitchen volunteer for more than two years with Lifelong AIDS Alliance.

I love cooking and and the prep work that goes with it, and I have a mostly IG page dedicated to shots of the food I make. Visit me: instagram.com/itstheplate.

I’m an engaging, fun, curious, and thoughtful person who would make a fantastic addition to your team.

Oh yeah…and that dog? He’s my mutt, Hadji. He’s camera shy, but every once in a while I capture his essence.

Testimonials

Rob started with graphic design and when our editor left, he offered to step up and perform the work of two, and in doing so elevated our publication to the elite level. Dentists can be among the toughest personalities to work with. No matter how demanding or quirky, Rob managed to get the best out of all of us. His communication, writing and art direction skills are top notch and his sense of humor will calm even the tensest situation. Above all he is honest, sincere, dedicated and hard working and someone you will like to hang out with. I am proud to recommend Rob.
— Dr. Rod Wentworth — Past President, WSDA
I worked with Rob Bahnsen as the dentist editor of WSDA News for nine years. Rob was the hard working brains and backbone of our multimedia communications program. He won many dental journalism and graphic awards. Most importantly, he was awarded the American Dental Association’s Golden Apple Award for his series on race and gender in dentistry. He handled this sensitive subject with grace. Rob is an exceptional human being. He is kind, strong and his integrity shows. His knowledge base is deep and he cares about details and getting things right. I loved working with him and would do it again in a heartbeat if I had the chance!
— Dr. Mary Jennings — Dental Editor, WSDA
I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Rob Bahnsen for over two decades, both at the WSDA and at Flying House Productions. Rob is an extremely talented art director. He is amazingly creative and has the ability to wear a lot of different hats. He has a positive attitude and a strong work ethic which both really translate into his work.
— Megan BEck, DCGOne
I worked with Rob during my tenure at the Dental Association. Rob’s vision and art direction were stellar. He always thinks strategically and meticulously plans a project from start to finish. But, perhaps most importantly, he’s delightful to work with. We shared many laughs as we plowed through work to meet a deadline. He’s also a team player. He showed up, coffee in hand for the entire team, at 5 a.m. for our annual lobby day and immediately went to work completing various “other duties as assigned” with a smile on his face.
— Anne Burkland, Government Relations Specialist
I have worked with Rob for over four years in his role at the Washington State Dental Association. I have collaborated with many different art directors in my 30 years as a photographer, and Rob is one of the best! He knows what he is looking for, but allows me to be creative, and is able to adjust on the fly if circumstances dictate. Rob wears many different hats at the WSDA, and excels at each one of them. I feel fortunate when I work with professionals that have good ideas, really know their business and make the work fun. Rob certainly falls into this category! I always look forward to the opportunities to work with Rob, I give him my highest recommendation!
— SCOTT EKLUND, RED BOX Pictures
Rob Bahnsen is a consummate professional with outstanding design, writing, podcast and interpersonal skills. He will be an asset in any company that values professionalism, attention to detail and managerial ability.
— Rhona Schwartz, Copy Cops
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Rob since I started as Director of Communications at the University of Washington School of Dentistry a decade ago. He has done a tremendous job with relatively skimpy resources in putting out a consistently compelling and attractive magazine for the Washington State Dental Association, and he has also maintained the WSDA’s timely and interesting blog. He’s been extremely helpful in sharing content that I’ve requested, and he’s just a thoroughgoing professional in every way. I’d recommend him wholeheartedly.

Review my work

Downtime

When I’m not working I’m likely with friends cooking up something new and exciting in the kitchen, out in the fresh air with Hadji, checking out Seattle’s vibrant arts scene, or volunteering with local organizations to give back to the city that has given me so much.
